Universal Search – What does it mean for my results?

Universal Search is Google’s answer to improving its already massive market share of the search engine ‘real estate’.

Google has been testing its algorithm for a while giving users a peak of Universal Search. We have been used to seeing search results information displayed vertically (unlike the less used A9.com of which has being trying something very similar and displaying the results in a column fashion), but now, in addition to text, video, blog and news results are being displayed.

Rather than grouping them by category, the various types of result are displayed appropriately within the top results or as part of the top 10 results.

So, how does this change affect your company?

Well, this shouldn’t concern you if your company already has a strong online presence, but companies with no press releases, no video presence, no blog articles, are increasingly likely to find their competitors displaying much higher results in these categories for a given search than theirs.
