It really is time I got back into the blogging habit on our website and I am prompted by an article I have just read.
e-skills UK has announced that over 60,000 small businesses have now benefited from the Business IT Guide website. The Guide aims to provide free, comprehensive and non-commercial IT-related information to small businesses.
e-skills UK say that the most requested Guides in the last financial year covered establising an online presence, selling online, setting up transactions and stock control.
The Business IT Guide say that most small businesses can benefit from a website and they provide guidance on how to go about getting a web presence.
All good stuff. However, I have a problem with the notion that having a website means that a small business has an instant global marketplace, or that creating an e-commerce site will create as much potential to expand as a big business.
The harsh reality is that new websites need to establish their credibility with the search engines and in the UK this means Google, whom the vast majority of people search with. Just creating a website will not do this because it will need optimising for the search engines. In the increasingly competitive world of Internet marketing, using SEO techniques and skilled Google Adwords PPC campaign management is the way forward. Many small businesses have thrown money away on websites that no one visits because they come nowhere in Google. Many have also embarked on poorly managed Adwords campaigns and given up because of the poor ROI.
